In the last four decades, the dream of homeownership in Nigeria has become increasingly elusive, due to some stringent requirements of traditional bank mortgage financing. Issues like high down payments, credit score thresholds, and rising interest rates can create significant barriers for potential homeowners.
Some reports seem to suggest that people of the South East (SE) Nigeria are worst hit by these, seemingly system-instigated, social and cultural obstacles, which make owning a home in the region almost for the very rich.
Nevertheless, a seamless innovative initiative has emerged that aims to bypass these obstacles to make homeownership more accessible and affordable for a broader range of the people.
Also, there have been reports of SE indigenes in the diaspora been disappointed by their families, friends or colleagues who fail to deliver on housing projects they assigned to them.
The reactions are always painful, fatal and sometimes result in death and all manner of tragedies, as the culprits try to cover their tracks.
The SEHI Initiative, in unlocking the estimated N25tr off-grid bank mortgage space, has devised a smooth path to meet this need of about half of the 10 million working Igbo in the diaspora. In peace, they can now build choice houses in their home states. This, for now, will cover major cities of Aba, Abakaliki, Awka, Enugu, Ekwulọbịa, Umuahia, Nnewi and Owerri.
According to Ayobanna Ikeanumba, the Founder and Chairman of SEHI Initiative, “the pathway offers a smooth timeline of about 18 months for a member to have a dream home delivered”
