The Nonsensicality of Connecting to the Center in Nigeria Politics

From The Publisher’s Desk

It has become very loud of late, especially as some Governors rush and stumble over each other to defect to the APC.

They normally bamboozle their fans that it’s better to connect to the centre for dividends of democracy.

Peter Mbah, Orji Uzor Kalu, Ben Kalu, Dave Umahi, Hope Uzodimma and few more in the South East, were reported to loudly echo this at the times they defected to the APC.

Few days ago I read the Plateau and Kano State Governors saying the same as reason to abandon their party base.

I may not be a fan of Tinubu, in his type of politics, but I give to him. During his time and up till 2023, he has not done what all these self-glorifying leaders have done.

As the Governor of Lagos State, he was the only standing opposition party state in the entire South West Nigeria.

He retraced inward, regrouped, recalibrated and re-observed a new way to sustain his State. No matter how bad it was and still is, he devised revenue models by leveraging on the massive population of Lagos to sustain the State.

Without taxes, there was no way he would have sustained his State during this time he was in running battle with Abuja.

This dark period gave him the opportunity to figure out a model to rule and keep his state shielded from Abuja aggression.

Now, what centre is Peter Mbah of Enugu looking for while he has grown the IGR of his state, within a year, from N36B to N180B in 24 months (as reported) and projecting N400B in the next year? What centre is he looking for?

Is Kano also looking for what in the center when it stands as the largest economy in Northern Nigeria, in terms of all indices?

For 8 years as Governor of Lagos State, Tinubu ignored the “centre” to develop a model that will live even after him.

Why then is Tinubu encouraging others to do the things he refuses to do? Or are they just persuading him to do what they are doing?

The talk about connecting to the centre is a fraud, mischief, self serving and acute betrayal of the people by the persons using it as an excuse to run to another party.
